Deepawali or Diwali ; the most awaited festival for any Indian. It sure brings in joy, color to life, money to some and lots of fun if you have the right people to spend the Diwali.
But what does Diwali mean to an average city dweller ? is it to pray God and thank him for all the luxuries and money he has showered upon; or have gourmet of food, wear wonderful clothes or what is it anyways ? To me , for any urban dweller, Diwali is a means to show case his wealth and buying power. As i walk around the narrow streets of the city, seeing all the little ones shooting away their toy gun with cape rolls, kids bursting silly crackers ( a small pack which has 100 crackers in it ) and real tough ones taking the buzz out of the dangerous ones. Again and again I'm brought to the reality when the same age group kids- from a different social background, come to the same streets to take home the leftovers, the half burnt crackers and what ever they could salvage out of the garbage on street braving the chilly night and the barking dogs. My point to all those who celebrate Diwali- the festival of joy, 'will you give away crackers worth Rs 100 to these kids and jump up saying - i have spread happiness ? '. Will you ?
I have seen very affluent families shoo away these children. As i say affluent, take note that very family would have bought 50K roll crackers - 6 pieces, 2 each for 3 days of Diwali. To my dismay, i find it common that common man discusses in city buses, on a corner tea shop as to how the state government employees make that extra easy buck to make it big this Diwali for their family. This is one part of the darker Diwali for those underprivileged kids. Beware, people reading would shout back at me with vengeance saying ' we are not em, we do dedicate '. This fact would go as a loud guffaw, signing off a exchequer for some amount to a charitable institution does not drive home the point that one has contributed in spreading happiness .if FM comes with a tax rebate on such a initiative where a India citizen gives away crackers worth Rs100 and collects a receipt from the kid and he can later file for returns, i bet the kids would get so affluent that they would go on to have a Diwali for a month.
